A Rotary first for environmental action

Rotary Australia World Community Service recently launched the Rotary Australia Trust for the Environment – a game-changing initiative that empowers Rotary clubs to take bold action for the environment.

The Rotary Australia Trust for the Environment (RATE) is a charitable trust established by Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) to support and facilitate the environmental projects of Australian Rotary clubs, both domestically and internationally.

With tax-deductible donations now available, clubs can amplify their impact, turning passion into powerful conservation projects that protect, restore and sustain our natural world.

Why RATE?

RATE is fully accredited by the ACNC and ATO as an environmental organisation and is exclusively focused on environmental protection. It provides a streamlined process for Rotary clubs to register and fund their projects, including:

  • Preserving natural habitats, from rainforests to wetlands
  • Protecting endangered species
  • Improving air and water quality for a healthier planet
  • Promoting sustainable development for future generations

Saving the Tooarrana

The Rotary Club of Morisset, NSW, has registered one of the first projects under RATE – an initiative in partnership with Aussie Ark to protect and breed the Tooarrana, a rare and endangered Broad-Toothed Rat. Through RATE funding, this project will provide essential care, feeding, genetic testing and long-term management at Barrington Tops through to 2027. This initiative demonstrates how Rotary can play a critical role in conservation efforts across Australia.

How to get involved

Rotarians and community members passionate about the environment can contribute in
several ways:

  • Rotary clubs: Register new environmental projects with RATE and access funding to maximise impact.
  • Individuals and businesses: Donate to registered projects and enjoy the benefit of tax deductions.
  • Advocacy: Share this initiative within Rotary networks and beyond to expand support.

By embracing this opportunity, Australian Rotary clubs can take environmental action to the next level, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
