Bush bikes bring joy to local children

The Rotary Club of Milawa Oxley is helping local families rebuild hope and normality by gifting new bikes to children impacted by recent bushfires.

The Rotary Club of Milawa Oxley, Vic, has brought a sense of joy and renewed freedom to four local young people whose families were impacted by the recent bushfires, through the donation of brand-new bush bikes.

Recognising the challenges faced by families who lost their homes, the club identified an opportunity to support young people in a meaningful and uplifting way. The bikes were presented to students from Sacred Heart Primary School and Yea Primary and Secondary College.

Rotary Club of Milawa Oxley President Lesley Sanderson said the initiative was about more than just providing a bike.

“After such a difficult and uncertain time for these families, we wanted to do something that would bring a smile to the children and give them a sense of normality again,” Lesley said.

“A bike represents freedom, fun and independence, and we hope these gifts provide moments of happiness during what has been a challenging period.”

The recipients include a nine-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy from Sacred Heart Primary School, a seven-year-old boy from Yea Primary School and a 14-year-old girl from Yea High School.

Each child received their own bike, along with well wishes from the Rotary Club of Milawa Oxley for safe riding and brighter days ahead.

Lesley said Rotary’s commitment to supporting local communities, particularly in times of need, remained at the heart of the club’s work.

“Rotary is about helping people, and this is a small way we can stand alongside families as they rebuild their lives,” she said.

The Rotary Club of Milawa Oxley continues to be actively involved in a range of local initiatives supporting community wellbeing, youth and recovery efforts across the region.
