High Flyers

The Rotary Club of Tasman Peninsula is located in a semi-isolated area of Tasmania, surrounded by the sea and with a limited capacity to raise funds for its many local, district and international projects.

In 2000, members initiated an event that was not only unique to Tasman Peninsula, but is a unique experience in itself. The initiative provides funds from all areas of Australia and is the club’s major source of income.

“The ever-popular event flies clients from the Tasmanian mainland to the isolated Tasman, which is now only accessible by helicopter, an experience not generally available to the public.”

The ever-popular event flies clients from the Tasmanian mainland to the isolated Tasman, which is now only accessible by helicopter, an experience not generally available to the public. By working with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife, and the Friends of Tasman Island, the club offers this experience to 140 clients on one weekend each year.

“We offer two hours on the island, access to the lighthouse and keepers’ quarters, conversations with former lighthouse keeping families and wonderful views of the seascape featuring the tallest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere,” Rotary Club of Tasman Peninsula Past President Arnold McShane says.

“Together, and as a whole club, all our members become involved with advertising, bookings, preparation of the site, marshalling, food preparation and public relations. It is an event that truly excites and unites our members and is a signature project for which the club is becoming widely renowned.”
