Philanthropist Dick Smith has reinforced his commitment to helping Australians facing hardship with a further $1 million donation to the Rotary Australia Compassionate Grants program, doubling the impact of Rotary’s grassroots fundraising efforts.

Administered by Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) under the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society (RABS), Rotary Australia Compassionate Grants (RACG) provide targeted financial assistance to individuals experiencing severe hardship.

This latest $1 million contribution follows Dick’s initial $2 million donation, which helped launch the RACG initiative. Since its inception, the program has distributed more than $6 million in grants to Australians facing rare diseases, medical conditions and unexpected life events – particularly those who are not receiving adequate support through other means.

The RACG program operates on a matching model, doubling the impact of Rotary club or district fundraising efforts by providing dollar-for-dollar contributions. This approach ensures that local communities can amplify their support and deliver direct, compassionate relief to those most in need.

RAWCS has long been a leader in humanitarian outreach. Since its founding in 1966, RAWCS has delivered more than $500 million in aid across 45 countries, supporting initiatives in disaster relief, clean water, education, health and economic development. The organisation’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is reflected in its wide-ranging efforts to uplift vulnerable communities both in Australia and abroad.

The RACG program is a clear example of this mission in action. Past grants have helped cover essential costs such as medical treatments, mobility aids and emergency housing. By focusing on individuals who often fall through the cracks of traditional support systems, RACG ensures that help reaches those who need it most.

Dick’s renewed support is expected to inspire further fundraising efforts among Rotary clubs across the country. With the matching model in place, local contributions will be doubled, enabling clubs to make a greater impact in their communities.

RAWCS encourages clubs and districts to apply for RACG funding and continue their compassionate work. With this new infusion of support, the program is poised to expand its reach and deliver even more meaningful assistance to Australians facing hardship.
