From Tasmania to Uganda: Rotary’s Global Reach

Assisted by a $2,000 district grant, the Rotary Club of Devonport South East, Tas, is helping transform healthcare in remote communities in Uganda.

A Community Health Day held at Namawanga Health Centre in Mbale, Uganda, has shown the remarkable impact of cross-continental collaboration on improving healthcare in remote communities. The event, organised by the Rotary Club of Mbale Metropolitan and supported by the Rotary Club of Devonport South East in Tasmania, underscored the power of community service and health awareness.

On March 16, 2024, healthcare professionals, volunteers, Rotarians, Rotaractors and community members came together to make a difference. Activities ranged from malaria testing and treatment to HIV testing and counselling and even cervical cancer screenings. The day aimed to provide immediate healthcare services, raise awareness about critical health issues, promote preventative healthcare, and encourage regular health checkups.

The event served as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by healthcare facilities in rural areas such as Namawanga. A lack of medical supplies, healthcare personnel and health education programs are common obstacles. The Community Health Day served to highlight these needs, emphasising the importance of initiatives like district grants in bridging these gaps.

The impact of the Community Health Day was significant. More than 500 individuals received free medical consultations, medications, and participated in health education sessions. The event also fostered a sense of community engagement and empowerment. Participants learned about health practices that could prevent diseases, and the day allowed for a dialogue between healthcare providers and the community, laying the foundation for ongoing support and collaboration.
