Symbols of Service
Understanding Rotary’s donor recognition pins.
Behind every pin is a story of generosity, commitment and the enduring spirit of Rotary.

Introduced in 1957, the Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition was created to honour Rotary’s founder and encourage contributions of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. In countries like Australia and New Zealand, where that amount was once out of reach for many, clubs often made the donation on behalf of members – turning the PHF into a symbol of service and dedication.
Though originally a recognition of financial support, the PHF became widely regarded as an award for outstanding service. Today, many Rotarians still see it that way – but more are embracing its true purpose: a celebration of generosity that sustains Rotary’s humanitarian work.
This recognition, while significant, is not about the individual – it’s about the impact. It’s a reflection of what we choose to support, the lives we help change and the future we help build. Too often, we shift our focus to the recognition itself – but it’s important to remember that it is just that – recognition of supporting something bigger.
Recognition that grows with generosity
As giving grew, so did the ways to honour it:
- In 1988, the Paul Harris Fellow pin was enhanced with sapphires and rubies to recognise additional contributions of US$1,000.
- The Major Donor recognition was introduced for cumulative giving of US$10,000 or more, marked by a distinctive pin and crystal.
- In 2004, the Arch Klumph Society (AKS) was launched to honour contributions starting at US$250,000 – with recognition levels now reaching up to US$10 million. Zone 8 proudly boasts AKS No. 4, with a contribution of US$2.5 million.
Planning for the future: Bequest and Legacy Societies
As Rotarians began considering their legacy, The Rotary Foundation responded. In 2005, the Bequest Society was created to recognise commitments of US$10,000 or more in wills or estate plans.
In Zone 8, more than 500 members have joined the Bequest Society, with combined commitments exceeding US$50 million. Many Rotarians in Australia and New Zealand, who may not have large amounts of disposable income but have built up significant assets over time, have found this a meaningful way to ensure the Foundation’s future.
To honour extraordinary legacy gifts, the Legacy Society was introduced for commitments of US$1 million or more. Australia now ranks second globally in Legacy Society membership – a testament to the region’s deep commitment to Rotary’s mission.

Local innovation: The Centurion Pin
In Australia and New Zealand, districts created the Centurion Pin to recognise donors who commit to giving AU$100 or more annually to the Annual Fund. This grassroots initiative helps generate District Designated Funds (DDF), empowering clubs to carry out impactful local and international projects.
Focused giving: PolioPlus and Paul Harris Societies
Two powerful giving programs offer additional recognition:
- The PolioPlus Society (PPS) honours those who pledge US$100 annually until polio is eradicated.
- The Paul Harris Society (PHS) recognises donors who commit to US$1,000 annually.
Joining is easy through Rotary Direct, with options to give monthly, quarterly or annually – and in Australia, donations made in AUD are tax-deductible.
More than a pin — A promise
Rotary’s donor recognition pins are not just tokens – they are promises kept, lives changed and communities uplifted. They reflect the heart of Rotary: Service Above Self, powered by generosity.
If The Rotary Foundation isn’t yet one of the charities you support, consider making it one today. Wear your pin with pride, knowing you’re helping Rotary continue to Do Good in the World.
