Tawa’s community spirit takes centre stage

A sunny afternoon, outstanding local performances and strong community support combined to make Tawa’s Concert in the Park a vibrant celebration of connection, pride and neighbourhood spirit.

This year’s Concert in the Park could not have been blessed with better weather, setting the scene for a vibrant community celebration at the Grassless Reserve in Tawa, NZ. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Tawa, an estimated 900 people attended, filling the park with families, music lovers and neighbours enjoying a relaxed afternoon together.

The feedback from the event has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the welcoming atmosphere, the high standard of performances, and the strong sense of community spirit throughout the day.

The musical performances were a true showcase of local talent. The Tawa Learners Band opened the program with energy and enthusiasm, followed by a powerful Kapa Haka performance from Tawa School that brought pride and mana to the stage. The Tawa College Jazz Band impressed with their musical flair, and the Barbershop Quartets delighted the crowd with their harmonies.

A standout moment came when the Jive Bombers from the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band took the stage, delivering an energetic set that brought the audience to its feet and closed the event on a high note.

“Every group delivered an outstanding performance, and we are delighted that all are keen to return next year,” said Rotary Club of Tawa member Michael Nestmann.

Families enjoyed additional entertainment from Foxtail, whose engaging children’s activities kept Tamariki busy and smiling throughout the afternoon. This was generously supported by the Wellington City Council.

Bringing the event to life was a true team effort. Volunteers were on site from 7am to meet staff setting up the stage, and by mid-morning were collecting gazebos, tables, chairs, cones and other equipment, before heading back to the park to prepare for the afternoon’s festivities.

A great deal of work also took place behind the scenes.

“A special thank you goes to John Melville, whose tireless efforts secured two essential grants: one from the Tawa Community Board to cover the stage, and another from the Hutt Mana Trust to fund the sound system,” said Michael.

Permissions were also needed for everything from using the Grassless Reserve to placing signs around Tawa, including separate approval for signs at railway stations. Every detail contributed to a seamless, successful event.

“Our heartfelt thanks also go to Judith Havill and her daughter, who ran the barbecue with wonderful support from additional volunteers,” said Michael. “Their efforts, combined with generous community donations, helped raise $820 on the day.

“We are especially grateful to our sponsors, whose contributions turned the barbecue into a real highlight. Mexted Motors supplied the sausages, New World provided the bread, Sprig & Fern donated ice blocks perfect for a warm afternoon, and Whittaker’s added their iconic chocolates. Their generosity helped make the day shine.”

All in all, Concert in the Park was a wonderful celebration of music, community connection and local pride.
